Our Realism Work
Realism tattoos could be framed pieces of art in a museum. Accurate, intricately detailed representations of just about anything you can think of come to life with precision and patience in realism tattoos. Take your time looking through these works of art done by the artists of Mantle.
Realism tattoos: what to know
Realism recreates a photo or real-life subject in skin, from portraits and animals to statues, flowers and eyes. It is built up in layers of shading, in black and gray or in color.
Who it suits
People with a specific reference in mind: a portrait of someone you love, a pet, or a favorite piece of art. It also suits collectors planning larger work, like a half or full sleeve.
Size and placement
Detail needs space. A realistic portrait usually needs to be roughly palm-sized or larger to keep features clear over time. The outer forearm, upper arm, calf, thigh, chest and back offer the largest, flattest areas. Bring the sharpest, best-lit reference photo you have.
Sessions and healing
Larger realism pieces are often done over more than one session, with healing time in between. Each session heals in about two to four weeks. Smooth gradients fade with sun exposure, so protect healed work with SPF.
Ready to plan yours? Book a virtual consultation to talk through size and placement, read our realism guide, and check the aftercare and deposit policy pages before your visit. We’re at 705 S Olive St in Downtown Los Angeles, an easy trip from Glendale and Pasadena. Our shop minimum is $150.
