Your First Tattoo at Mantle, Step by Step

Your first tattoo is a big decision, and not knowing what to expect can make it feel bigger. At Mantle, the process is straightforward. Here's every step, from your first message to a healed tattoo.

Before you start: choosing your first design

There's no rule that a first tattoo has to carry deep meaning. Some people mark a person or a moment; others just love a design. Either way, a few questions help:

  • Have you liked it for a while? If you've kept coming back to the same idea for a few weeks or months, that's a good sign.
  • Will it suit the size you want? Detailed designs need room to age well, so a very intricate idea may need to be larger, or simpler, than you first pictured.
  • Where will it live? Think about how visible you want it at work and day to day. Outer arm, forearm, shoulder, thigh and calf are popular first spots: easy to show or cover, and generally more comfortable than ribs, hands or feet.

Not sure about style? Browsing our portfolio pages is a good way to find what you're drawn to.

Step 1: Tell us your idea

Start with a text to 323.395.0049 or an appointment request. You don't need a finished design, just a starting point:

  • A reference or two: photos of tattoos you like, artwork, or a description.
  • Placement: where on your body you're thinking.
  • Rough size: in inches, or compared to a credit card or your palm.
  • Color or black and gray.

Not sure yet? A free virtual consultation is a low-pressure way to talk through your idea, ask questions and get artist recommendations before you commit.

Step 2: Get matched and get an estimate

We'll match you with an artist whose style fits your idea. Our artists work across fine line, delicate, script, realism, traditional and neo-traditional.

Tattoos are quoted per piece, based on the design, size and placement. If you have a budget in mind, tell us; we can simplify the design or adjust the size to fit it. Our shop minimum is $150. See how our pricing works.

Step 3: Book with a deposit

A $100 deposit holds your appointment and goes toward the final cost. It's non-refundable, but with at least one full business day's notice we'll move your appointment without asking for a new one. You'll get text and email confirmations, plus reminders before the day. Details are in our deposit policy.

Step 4: Your artist prepares the design

Between booking and your appointment, your artist draws up your design. Even if you've brought an exact reference, it still needs to be adapted, sized and prepared for tattooing on your body.

Step 5: Get ready for the day

  • Sleep well and eat a real meal beforehand.
  • Skip alcohol for at least 24 hours.
  • Wear clothes that give easy access to the placement.
  • Bring a valid photo ID. You must be 18 or older to get tattooed in California.

Our guide to getting tattooed in Downtown LA covers parking, the Metro and what to bring.

Step 6: See your design and approve the stencil

You'll see your custom drawing on the day, before the session starts. This is the time to speak up:

  • Small changes are no problem at this stage: adjusting the size slightly, moving an element, tweaking a detail.
  • Bigger changes, like a different concept or a much larger piece, may need a new appointment so your artist can redraw it properly.

Once you're happy, your artist places a stencil on your skin. Check it in the mirror: placement, angle and, for lettering, every letter. Your artist would much rather adjust a stencil than fix a tattoo.

Step 7: The session

Your artist sets up with single-use, disposable equipment: new needles, ink caps, gloves and barrier film for every client. Then they get to work.

Most first-timers find the session more manageable than they expected.
  • It's uncomfortable, but very manageable for most people. It feels different on different parts of the body: fleshier areas like the outer arm and thigh tend to be easier, while bonier areas like ribs, feet and hands are more sensitive.
  • Speak up if you need a break. Short breaks to stretch, drink water or have a snack are normal.
  • Breathe and stay still; it helps more than you'd think.

Step 8: Aftercare and healing

When you're done, your artist bandages the tattoo and goes over aftercare. The basics: keep it clean, pat it dry, use a thin layer of unscented lotion once or twice a day, and stay out of pools, the ocean and direct sun while it heals, usually two to four weeks. Our aftercare guide has everything.

Step 9: Touch-ups, if needed

Sometimes a spot heals lighter than intended. That's normal, and every Mantle tattoo includes a free touch-up within the first year. Once it's fully healed, text us to set it up.

First tattoo FAQ

Should I tell my artist about medical conditions or medications?

Yes. Let us know if you're pregnant, take blood thinners, have diabetes, a skin condition in the area or a history of keloid scarring. Some of these mean checking with your doctor first. Your artist would always rather know.

Can I bring a friend for support?

Ask when you book. Space around each station is limited, so it helps to plan ahead.

How long will my first tattoo take?

It depends on the size and detail. A small, simple piece is often done fairly quickly once the stencil is on, while detailed or shaded work takes longer. Ask when you book and we'll give you an idea of how much time to set aside.

Should I tip my artist?

Tipping is customary and appreciated, but never required. If you're happy with your tattoo, a tip is a nice way to say so.
